Soy Extract Helps Some Prostate Cancer Patients
Topics: Nutrition and Cancer
Genistein belongs to the isoflavone class of flavonoids, and is also classified as a phytoestrogen (an estrogen-like substance found in some plants and plant products that are plant-derived nonsteroidal compounds possessing estrogen-like biological activity). Genistein has been found to have both weak estrogenic and weak anti-estrogenic effects.According to researchers from the University of California, Davis Cancer Center, a dietary supplement that contains the soy extract genistein reduced prostate-specific antigen (PSA) levels by as much as 61 percent in men with untreated prostate cancer. However, the dietary supplement didn't have the same effect in men who had undergone surgery, radiation or hormone therapy for prostate cancer.
... The study included 62 men with prostate cancer and elevated PSA levels. They were given 5 grams a day of genistein concentrated polysaccharide for six months.
Take home message - a pound of prevention is ...... worth a ton of cure!
